Here are 5 great and free ways to market your erotica on Amazon!
People ask me all the time about marketing their erotica.
And I get it…you want as many eyeballs on your books to sell more copies.
If you don’t get eyeballs on your books you won’t sell any copies.
Simple as that.
BUT before I talk about these methods to market your book I want to make something clear:
Marketing should be something you do AFTER you have mastered the basics of writing erotica.
And this is because marketing can take a lot of time away from your core activities such as researching new story ideas and the actual task of writing.
In general, I think most authors should avoid these marketing strategies until they get 10 – 15 books under their belt.
So if you’re not there yet, keep writing!
But if you are around that level…here are 5 marketing strategies you can use to market your books and get more sales
1. Twitter
Twitter is probably one of the easiest platforms to market your books.
There are large “Twitter” communities for many popular erotica niches such as:
- Gay/Lesbian
- BDSM
- Cuckolding
- MILFS
- …and so much more!
The communities aren’t super hard to find. Just search “name of your niche” + erotica and you’ll find them.
Twitter is great because it also allows you to connect with like minded authors.
Yes, they may be your competition, but it doesn’t mean you can’t be friends and promote each other’s content!
One strategy you can use to gain followers is to look up the Twitter profiles of big authors in that niche and follow some of their followers.
You’ll inevitably get some people who follow you back and re-tweet your content!
Also…while you are using twitter make sure to use the proper hashtags to target the right audience!
If you’re wondering which hashtags to use, one thing you can do is (again) look up the top authors in that niche and see which hashtags they are using.
Also if you are promoting your books on Twitter, you can sign up to be an Amazon Associate Affiliate and earn a small commission (on top of the royalty) on each sale of your book!
2. Facebook
Okay…sometimes Facebook does censor some “erotic” content, but the platform still has INCREDIBLE reach.
And tons of top authors have their own facebook pages (although they are typically in the romance genre).
Now Facebook is a bit more of a niche way to market in my opinion and it depends on what kind of books you are writing/selling.
And this is because Facebook profiles use your real names. And obviously some people don’t want to be associated with a certain genre of erotica.
So do your research and see if there are any authors in your erotica niche promoting on facebook and see how big their audience is.
If they have 1,000+ likes on their Facebook group/page, then it’s a good indication that it’s an effective marketing medium.
Just be sure to post regularly on what you’re doing and update readers on new releases!
3. Email list
To be perfectly honest, an email list is a PAIN IN THE ASS to build.
However, it is very powerful because it gives you direct access to your readers.
It’s super hard to build an email list because you need somewhere for people to click on your link to sign up.
This could be in your eBook or it could be on your website or social media pages.
That’s why it’s much better to build an email list later when you are more established.
Also, giving away some free content is a great way incentivize people to sign up for your list.
4. Tumblr
While this is only applicable in certain erotica niches, you can post a lot of content on Tumblr to get views for your Amazon author page.
Tumblr is great because (like Twitter) there are A TON of build in communities for certain niches. And they do allow more “risque” content on their site…which is good for us authors!
And you really don’t need to do much to get some views on your Tumblr profile.
Using the right hashtags can already get you a decent amount of views.
And the community is pretty active, so you can get a good following pretty quick (at least in my experience).
In terms of what content to publish on Tumblr, I would lean towards posting the cover of your book there along with some excerpts (like of the sex scene).
5. Keywords
Okay, this is my ABSOLUTE favorite marketing strategy
Why?
Because it can give you the most sales!
If you can land one of your books on the first 10 pages of Amazon’s search results, you will do pretty well.
But getting there requires some work and experimenting around. However, you can’t deny the results.
One of my pen names regularly has 3 – 5 books in the first 10 pages of the search results for a top keyword of the niche.
And that pen name regularly makes passive income of $400 – $500 per month!
So don’t underestimate the power of what keywords can do for you.
Keywords are something most people gloss over and maybe spend 10 – 15 minutes on after they spend days writing their book.
But if you put in the effort, I promise you that keywords will help your sales a lot.
P.S. if you’re interested in avoiding a lot of the trial and error and headaches of keyword research (or just want some extra help), be sure to check out my keyword templates!
